Town Slaughterhouse

It was built between 1904  – 1905, (the new building for the ice factory in 1910), arch. László Székely, constr. Eugen Klein).

The evolution of Timișoara around 1900, especially the massive increase of population, made it necessary to built a slaughterhouse which would meet the main hygiene requests and health norms of that time. Looking after the slaughterhouses built in Germany, the young architect Székely composed an ensemble of 11 distinct buildings (most of which were torn down unfortunately). The projected slaughterhouse corresponded to the highest technologies of those times: the transportation of meat was made by using suspended monorails, etc.

From an architecture design standpoint, the composition of this ensemble is dominated by the water tower, which is situated on the main simetry axe of the complex. The tower represents a good view standpoint for the current Daliei Street. It looks like a medieval tower with neoromantic and neogothic art elements. The tower exists to this day, with the exception of the initially sharp roof, and it remains alongside the ensemnle of the main gate, flanked by two pillars, each standing on a massive die which support monumental sculptures which symbolize the activity in work halls.

The restoration project  envisages rebuilding the sharp roof (medievally inspired), which was on the original tower and disappeared decades ago. The project also proposes rebuilding the roof with its original silhouette, but made of steel and glass as a modern replica of the initial monumental tower.
