Wooden Churches
In the area of the upper basin of Bega river, the area still forested on extended surfaces, a rich architecture in wood had developed, represented both by traditional houses and country schools, administrative buildings or commercial constructions, but the most important still kept today are the worship places.
The studied area proves to be one of the most conservative areas of Banat with regard to religious architecture monuments, most of the wood churches being still kept today, which gives the specific of the area and at the same time represents a high touristic potential.
Even if masonry churches are built, the wood ones are also kept, which makes for in several localities, near the old wood church to be also a masonry church (Curtea, Batești, Povergina), sometimes the wood churches were sold or donated to other villages.
With regard to the construction technique behind the wooden churches, it perfectly meets the traditional technique of the popular architecture. In most of the churches, the wood is apparent; some of them are pasted, such as in Curtea, and in the Poieni church we can find a very original way of protecting the walls; plating with clapboard in "patch system".
An important feature of the wood churches are the elevation items represented by the towers of the bell tower from over the narthex, which mandatorily leads to the ceiling, while the nave remains in a semi-circular dome.
The oldest wooden church in the area , dated by inscription in 1676, is the church of Crivina de Sus. The inscription is noted in Cyrillic.
The oldest wooden churches kept in the area date back in the 18th century and these are: Poieni, Crivina de Sus, Româneşti, Curtea, Margina, Jupâneşti, Băteşti.
