The Iosefin Catholic Church
The Iosefin Parochial Catholic Church St. Mary is situated on Regele Carol I Bd., on the corner of General Dragalina Bd.
The construction started in 1774, and completed in 1775. It was damaged during the siege of 1849, after which it was restored. The tower spire was built in 1889. The church was later restored in 1985.
The construction of this church started a year after the district, then inhabited by Germans, received the name Iosefin. It represents the characteristic features of the late Baroque style with sseveral rococo details. The building dominated the surrounding structures as long as Iosefin had a rural aspect. Houses had a short façade with a fronton by the street and a long façade on one side of the land in the yard, like the villages in Banat plains. After Iosefin began to grow rapidly following Timişoara’s connection to the Central European railway system, the baroque tower of the church started to seem too short. Thus, in 1889, the sharp spire of the tower was built, still existing today, giving the building an unusual svelte-like appearance for Baroque compositions. For a long time, the clock in the church tower was the only public clock in Iosefin, in a time when ordinary people could not afford buying a watch.
